Touma Law Group defends people charged with crimes across South Carolina. We handle DUI, drug charges, assault and battery, domestic violence, gun charges, theft, white collar cases, sex offenses, juvenile matters, federal charges, and professional license defense. Each office works its own circuit. Greenville sits in the Thirteenth, Columbia in the Fifth, Anderson in the Tenth, and Beaufort in the Fourteenth. General Sessions hears the felonies and serious misdemeanors that make up most of a criminal docket, and you will be there, and in the magistrate and municipal courts, on a regular basis.
Experience helps, and we would rather hire the right person without it than the wrong person with it. We look first for judgment, work ethic, and how you treat someone on the worst day of their life. The rest we teach.
New associates start with structured training on how we run a file in Clio, from the first client call through disposition. Every associate is paired with a senior attorney who reviews the work and goes to court with them. You second chair before you sit first chair, and nobody stands up alone before they are ready.
We pay at the top of the market for this role in South Carolina. Where you land depends on the experience you bring, how you carry yourself with clients and in court, and the results you get.
What You Will Do
- Carry a caseload of misdemeanor and felony matters in your county and the circuits around it, with a senior attorney supervising
- Appear at bond hearings, preliminary hearings, motion hearings, plea hearings, and General Sessions roll call
- Draft and argue pretrial motions, including motions to suppress and motions to dismiss
- Review discovery, including incident reports, body-worn and dash camera footage, lab results, and witness statements, and build fact chronologies from it
- Interview clients and witnesses, and keep clients current on where their case stands
- Negotiate with the solicitor's office in your circuit, and on federal matters with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina
- Prepare cases for trial and try them, second chair first and then on your own
- Handle professional license matters before the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation when they arrive alongside a criminal charge
- Keep case notes, deadlines, and court dates accurate in Clio, which is where every file lives
What We Are Looking For
- Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school
- Admitted to the South Carolina Bar and in good standing, or awaiting admission after sitting for the bar exam
- Willing to be on your feet in a courtroom, in front of a judge, a solicitor, and a gallery full of people waiting on their own case
- Legal writing that can be filed after light editing, not a rewrite
- Sound judgment with confidential case files and with clients under real stress
- Reliable transportation to your assigned office and to courthouses across the circuit
- Willing to work from the office and the courthouse, since this is not a remote role
Nice to Have
- Any criminal defense experience, including a solicitor's office, a public defender's office, or a law school clinic
- Trial experience, including any first or second chair time
- Admission to the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina
- Conversational Spanish, since a meaningful share of our clients are Spanish-speaking
- Military service, or experience working with veterans
- Prior work in Clio, or in another case management system
