Touma Law Group defends people charged with crimes in South Carolina: DUI, drug charges, assault, domestic violence, gun charges, sex offenses, and federal cases. We are a veteran-owned firm with offices in Greenville, Columbia, Anderson, and Beaufort, and our attorneys are in General Sessions and magistrate courts most weeks of the year.
Our internship is built around that court calendar. You are not here to fetch coffee and reorganize a closet. Interns research the case law an attorney is about to argue, review the discovery that will decide whether a motion to suppress gets filed, and sit in the gallery while it happens. You will see the whole arc of a criminal case, from the first bond hearing to a plea or a verdict.
We host interns every semester and every summer. Tell us which office and which term you want, and we will build a schedule around your class load.
What You Will Do
- Research South Carolina criminal statutes and appellate decisions, and write short memos an attorney can use in court the same week
- Draft and cite-check motions such as motions to suppress, discovery motions, and bond reduction motions, all under attorney supervision
- Review discovery packets, incident reports, and dash-cam and body-cam footage, and build fact chronologies from them
- Attend bond hearings, preliminary hearings, and General Sessions terms alongside the attorney handling the case
- Sit in on client consultations and help prepare intake summaries
- Keep case files, deadlines, and court dates accurate in our case management system
- Observe jury trials from jury selection through verdict, and take part in the debrief afterward
What We Are Looking For
- Enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school, or in an undergraduate pre-law or criminal justice program
- Legal research and writing skills strong enough to produce a memo that needs light editing, not a rewrite
- Discretion with confidential case material, because you will be handling real files about real people
- Reliable transportation to your assigned office and to county courthouses
- At least 15 hours per week during the semester, or full-time hours over the summer
Nice to Have
- Prior exposure to criminal law through a clinic, a solicitor's office, or a public defender's office
- Conversational Spanish, since a meaningful share of our clients are Spanish-speaking
- Military service, or experience working with veterans
- Familiarity with Westlaw or Lexis
Why This Firm
Courtroom time from the start
Our attorneys are in court most weeks, and everyone who works here goes with them. You learn criminal defense by watching bond hearings and trials, not by reading about them.
Small firm, real responsibility
There is no layer of associates between you and the person whose case you are working on. Your research gets used. Your questions get answered by the attorney arguing the motion.
Veteran-owned and veteran-minded
Several of our attorneys served, including a combat deployment to Fallujah. That shows up in how we prepare, how we back each other, and how seriously we take a client who is counting on us.
Four offices, one team
Greenville, Columbia, Anderson, and Beaufort work the same cases together. You will know the whole firm, not just your floor.
